Marie Hanlon was born in Ireland in 1948, she studied Art History at University College Dublin and began painting in the early 90s. Since then she has had numerous solo exhibitions and contributed to several group exhibitions in Ireland, mainland Europe and America. Her work is included in public and private collections worldwide.
The starting point for a painting may be triggered by almost anything - a piece of coloured paper, a length of wire or even the residue of marks accumulated on pavements over time. Perhaps such things are noticable because the eye is already on alert, unconsciously looking for material to process. The objective is not to represent the thing seen but from it to make something entirely new, something not seen before, while at the same time rendering a coherent painting.
These works are concerned with the pull between randomness and deliberation. Patterns exist but they are not strictly adhered to. Geometry is coupled with freehand lines, and precision in execution is undercut by imperfection. Its as if there is a constant tugging to be free while at the same time enjoying the formal elements of order and balance.
