Sherman Sam
Sherman Sam was born in Singapore in 1966. He received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1991 and Master of Letters in History of Art from the University of Oxford in 1997. Sam has exhibited internationally including; at the Centre de Arte in Sao Joao da Madeira, the Lugar do Desenho, Portugal; Even Educated Fleas, Soho House, London; The Right Place, Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford; Sightmapping, Uddevalla SE, GoMA (Glasgow, UK), Sala Rekalde (Bilbao, SP); Photopsis, Bilkin Contemporary Art, Bilbao, Spain; and more recently Plan D, Palacete Viscondes de Balsamao (Porto), Rubicon (Dublin) and Model Arts (Sligo).
Stuart Morgan said of Sam’s work, "If overripe colour and awkward conjunctions are characteristic of Sherman Sam’s paintings, so too is his sense of humour: neither ironic or satirical, though fashion and taste are strong influences, but based instead on mental agility brought to bear on questions we might have assumed were settled for once and for all. In the tension between irony and honesty in Sam’s paintings lies his entire meaning".
